“Fresh chopped brisket on the board!!!!”

The idea behind this costume came about when I saw that there was a Buc-ee’s (yes the gas station Buc-ee’s) fan gathering planned for the convention DragonCon. Though Buc-ee’s is know for many things from having over 250 gas station pumps, the world’s longest car wash, and some of the freshest brisket you can find right off the highway, they are also known for the clever marketing that can be found all over highways across America.

I have made Buc-ee billboards in the past, but wanted to create something different and unique for DragonCon since this convention is known to have cosplay themed to just this con. I decided to create a large prop the resembled the Buc-ee’s highway location sign. And for the location I put “DragonCon” since this was where this costume was going to be worn.

The sign was created using PVC piping as a base. I split the PVC into 3 sections and used electrical connectors so that the prop can break down for easy transportation.

The sign itself was made using EVA foam that was cut, glued, and sanded before applying many layers of primer and paint.

The hat and (not visible) beaver tail were also hand made. I used minky fur for both the ears and tail and added some eva foam to the inside of the ears to help keep them propped up. The tail has elastic loops sewn to the base to allow me to wear it with any belt. You can read my DIY guide on the ears and tail on my blog here.
